I have recently unlocked all the expert staff ghosts, I will give you my times and the expert staff ghost times. Then you will know what time to aim for when unlocking those buggers! I race on a medium weight character with a match bike.

How to avoid a POW?
The POW is a special attack that you or your opponents can obtain in a race, sometimes it even appears in battle mode. So how do you avoid being slowed down by one? It takes a little timing before you will master this, but right before it's going to hit, flick your wii remote up! Just like doing a trick mid-air. This will make you spin around and you will lose your item, but your speed won't be affected by it.

Fast recovery!
When you fall off the track and you are being put back on, press gas (A/2) right when you land to get a temporary boost. This will help you get back in the race quicker.

Online boasting!
If you're an online player, you can get a star next to your name! Complete every single grand prix cup with 1 to 3 stars to put 1 to 3 stars next to your name. If you have at least 1 on every cup, you can put 1 star there. At least 2 for 2 stars and 3 for 3.

Easy Staff Ghosts!

First of all you need to race on a motor, a fast one. Because you can't make any mistakes here, so you don't need the acceleration. Motors just race better, you can make way better angles going through a corner. What I found to be the easiest tracks:

Easy Ones

• Luigi Circuit (time around 1:26 unlock its)
  
• Moo Moo Meadows (time around 1:32 unlocks it)
  
• Toad's Factory (time around 2:12 unlocks it)
• Mario Circuit (time around 1:39 unlocks it)
• GCN Peach Beach (time around 1:30 unlocks it)
• DS Yoshi Falls (time around 1:22 unlocks it)
• N64 Mario Raceway (time around 2:07 unlocks it)
• GCN Donkey Kong Mountain, this must be the easiest of them all, I beat the expert ghost by 5 seconds on this one, after some practice ofcourse!
• SNES Mario Circuit 3 (time around 1:33 unlocks it, if you're good at drifting this is no problem at all)
• GBA Bowser Castle 3 (time around 2:47 unlocks it)

A couple tricks that will help you on the way.

1. Don't have a quick start? Restart!
2. Made a mistake? Restart!
   
3. Perform a weelie on long straight ends for extra speed, it helps.
4. If your own ghost is faster than the default computer ghost, race against your own ghost.
5. Use your speed ups at the right places!
6. If you really can't make it and get ass kicked by the default ghost or you just barely beat him/her, then you can watch the default ghost replay. See where he uses his speed ups, where he cuts off, where he starts drifting, etc.

How to get a star rank and more!

Some of the unlockables require a star rank for a certain amount of Cups. But how do you get these star ranks? At the end of each cup your results are being graded, this will show in the right upper corner of the end result screen. If you do well and complete the cup (rank 1-3), you will most likely get a somewhere between a C and an A. If you win the cup with nothing but victories you will most likely get at least 1 star. If not, your total time was a little too slow.

In this Wii version of mario kart they changed the quickstart, powerstart, fast start or whatever you may call it. To do this little start trick, press the gas button right when the 2 is on your screen and starts to fade away. It will require a little practice but Im sure you will figure it out.

Doing tricks mid-air will give you a boost once you land. You do this by quickly moving your wii remote into a random direction. Your character will then perform a trick mid-air and once you land you will get a nice boost. This can be done on the smallest jumps, so keep on the lookout for this performance increase!
